Thatcham Tracker Installation
Thatcham-Approved S5 & S7 GPS Tracker Fitting by Expert Technicians
Call Now: 07931535333What Is a Thatcham Tracker?
Thatcham Research is the UK's independent automotive research centre that sets the standards for vehicle security products. A Thatcham-approved tracker is a tracker plus a 24/7 monitoring service run by the tracker company. That monitoring is what makes it insurance approved; a regular, self-monitored tracker is not Thatcham approved, whoever fits it. Most UK insurers recognise Thatcham ratings and require approved trackers for high-value vehicles.
We install Thatcham S7, S5 and S5 PLUS trackers (S5 was formerly known as Category 5) across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire. Our mobile fitting service means expert installation at your location — home, work or business premises.
Thatcham Tracker Categories Explained
Thatcham S7 — Monitored Tracking
Best for: Most cars and vans under £30k
What's Included
- 24/7 monitoring by the tracker company
- Monitoring centre liaises with police on theft
- GPS tracking via mobile app
- Real-time location updates
- Covert installation
How It Works
The tracker company's monitoring centre covers your vehicle 24/7 and liaises with police if it is stolen. You can also see the vehicle yourself in the app. S7 does not include driver recognition — that is what S5 adds.
Insurance
Recognised by most insurers, and meets insurance requirements for vehicles up to £30k. Speak to your insurer about the discounts they provide.

Thatcham S5 — Driver Recognition
Best for: High-value vehicles (£30k+), required by many insurers
What's Included
- Everything in S7, plus:
- Automatic driver recognition — cards, fobs or phone
- Alerts if the vehicle moves without a recognised driver
How It Works
The tracker company's monitoring centre detects theft automatically. If the vehicle moves without a recognised driver present, the centre contacts you to verify, then alerts police with real-time location data. Police can track the vehicle live.
Insurance
Required by most insurers for vehicles over £30k. Essential for Range Rover, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and other commonly targeted vehicles. Speak to your insurer about the discounts they provide.

Thatcham S5 PLUS — Immobilisation
Best for: High-value and frequently stolen vehicles, where the insurer asks for immobilisation
What's Included
- Everything in S5, plus:
- Immobilisation — the vehicle will not start without a recognised driver
How It Works
S5 PLUS adds immobilisation to S5. With no recognised driver present, the vehicle's starter motor is disabled so it cannot be started — on top of S5's 24/7 monitoring and driver recognition.
Insurance
Some insurers require S5 PLUS for the highest-value or most frequently stolen vehicles. Your insurer decides which category a policy needs, so check with them before you buy. Speak to your insurer about the discounts they provide.

Which Thatcham Tracker Do I Need?
Check Your Insurance Policy
Your insurer may specify a minimum Thatcham category. Look for phrases like "Thatcham S5 required" or "Category 5 tracker mandatory" in your policy documents or quote conditions. Category 5 is the older name for S5, so an S5 tracker meets a Category 5 requirement.
Vehicle Value Guide
- Under £30,000: S7 tracker is usually sufficient
- £30,000 - £60,000: S5 tracker typically required
- Over £60,000: S5, or S5 PLUS where the insurer asks for immobilisation
- High-theft-risk models: S5 minimum regardless of value
These are the levels insurers commonly ask for, not a recommendation from us. Confirm the category with your insurer before you commit to a product — they set the requirement, and getting it in writing protects you if a lower category would not have met the policy.
High-Theft-Risk Vehicles
These makes are commonly targeted and usually require S5 (formerly Category 5):
- Range Rover / Land Rover
- BMW (M Sport, X5, X6, X7)
- Mercedes (AMG, GLE, GLS)
- Audi (RS, S-line, Q7, Q8)
- Ford Transit Custom (tool theft)
- Volkswagen Transporter
Not Sure? Ask Your Insurer
Your insurer decides which Thatcham category your policy needs, and it is worth getting that in writing before you buy — a lower category than they require can leave a claim disputed. Once you know which one they want, call 07931535333 or use our contact form and we will fit it.

Thatcham Tracker FAQs
What's the difference between S5 and S7?
Both are monitored 24/7 by the tracker company, which liaises with police if the vehicle is stolen. The difference is driver recognition: S5 knows when an authorised driver is present, so if the vehicle moves without one the monitoring centre is alerted automatically. S7 does not have driver recognition. S5 PLUS goes a step further and adds immobilisation.
Will my insurer accept a Thatcham S7 tracker?
For vehicles under £30,000, most insurers accept S7. For higher-value vehicles, S5 (formerly Category 5) is usually required. Check your policy or call your insurer to confirm.
How covert is the installation?
Very covert. Trackers are installed in hidden locations within the vehicle with no visible wiring or modifications. The exact position is only known to you and us — not even detailed in service records.
Can thieves detect or jam Thatcham trackers?
Thatcham-approved trackers include anti-jamming technology. S5 systems use multiple communication methods and automatically alert the monitoring centre if jamming is detected.
Do I get an insurance certificate?
Yes, all Thatcham installations include a certificate confirming the tracker category and installation date. This is sent to you and can be forwarded to your insurer.
What about the monthly subscription?
Subscription and monitoring costs depend on the approved system your insurer requires. We provide the hardware, fitting and ongoing-service costs together in a system-specific quote before you book.
How long does installation take?
S7 installation: 30 minutes to an hour. S5 and S5 PLUS installation: 30 minutes to an hour, plus a little longer for driver recognition setup. We install at your location across Milton Keynes, Bucks, Oxon, Northants and Herts.
